Work in the newsroom
I’m an engagement strategist, reporter and digital journalist.
Selected work samples are below.
Engagement + digital journalism
I'm passionate about bridging the gap between newsrooms and the communities they serve by fostering connections online and face-to-face. I don’t define the world of “engagement” as solely social media (although I can do that, too) — I believe newsrooms need to build trust with their readers in order to tell their stories and serve them authentically.
I’m the engagement reporter for The Seattle Times’ 10-person investigative team. I previously worked on the newsroom’s digital team with a focus on breaking news and social media, and I've also worked in audience engagement at Politico Europe and the Columbia Missourian. Here are some highlights from my experience:
The Seattle Times
Work alongside reporters to source stories through thoughtful callouts and creative crowdsourcing methods
Report investigative stories in collaboration with reporters, focusing on reaching communities of interest
Serve as an advocate for readers, creating reported resource guides to accompany investigations
Build promotion plans for complex investigative projects, thinking creatively about reaching broad audiences and targeted stakeholders
Explain our team's work through a crowdsourced FAQ about investigative reporting and a subscriber newsletter explaining the work that goes into complex investigative projects
Newsletter examples: a police shooting in Tacoma, nursing home staffing, police decertification
Maintain an active partnership with Trusting News, aiming to bring transparency to our reporting process and earn trust with readers
Share analytics data with the investigative team, informing coverage decisions and digital presentation of stories
In previous role:
Oversaw longterm social media strategy for the Times' flagship accounts, reaching hundreds of thousands of readers across the Pacific Northwest
Curated the seattletimes.com homepage, balancing news judgment with analytics and data
Worked on a team to manage breaking news coverage, with responsibility for social media and push alerts
Columbia Missourian
Led a team of ten students focused on bringing community engagement into the reporting process for Columbia’s daily city newspaper
Planned a campus outreach event to start discussion with students about the #MeToo movement; created a quiz to test students' knowledge of their Title IX rights and an informational flyer to give them afterwards
Collaborated with engagement team to develop the Missourian's first community awards program, collect nominations from citizens, create a special section and host an award ceremony
Presented to local community groups, explaining our publication’s reporting process and discussing their ideas for coverage
Politico Europe
Initiated weekly analytics reports for the production team and evaluated four months of analytics at the end of my internship
Developed plans for reaching specialized policy-focused audiences; created a strategy to share evergreen content from archives
Produced Facebook Live videos hosted by reporters
Wrote a draft comment policy for the website to encourage civil, productive conversation
Reporting + writing
My favorite stories combine data with narrative to show how policies affect real people. I’ve reported on education, health, public safety, business and other local issues. I’ve also examined the ever-changing news industry and covered new developments in journalism. Selected stories are below.
